introduction

Where we were

National Dong Hwa University was inaugurated in 1994 in Hualien, Taiwan.
The institute of Applied Mathematics was among one of the founding
institutes. The undergraduate program started on 1996 and PhD program
started on 1998. It is not easy for a new department. Fortunately, we did
not have to do it alone. We are grateful for the researchers and fellow
colleagues helping and supporting us all the way, particularly in the
those early years.

Who we are

The research interest of the faculty members cover wide branches of pure
and applied mathematics. Please refer to our faculty pages for more
information. Our course design reflects this diversity but nonetheless
focuses on three themes: mathematics (in more classical or "pure" sense),
probability and statistics, computer science. The faculty has high
percentage of getting NSC grant and many have received additional rewards
or acknowledgement. From time to time, some are invited to seminar talks,
serial talks on special topics or invited talk in national or
international conferences. Also many involve joint projects with
researchers from other part of Taiwan and the world. Weekly seminars
provide good windows for us to learn from national and international
scholars.

Where we are heading

We are active in research and working our way to excellency. Few people
speaks good mathematics and even fewer knows how to utilize them now. It
is a loss to mathematics and to other disciplines. Innumeracy is simply
a tip of the iceberg. As teachers and researchers, we have a major mission:
increase and diffuse, to steal the motto of Smithonian Institute. In the
age of informatics, this mission is even more interesting, challenging
and pressing. Our current foci for teaching and research are:
Probability and Statistics
Cryptology
Intelligent Numerical Computation
Details are refer to our Research page.

Supplemental

Our faculty members are young, our university is young, our department is
even younger. Good reasons for you to visit, even if you are local.
Moreover, we are in Hualien. Hualien is well-known for the world-famous
Taroko National Park, other best-kept natural beauty and a unique window
to Indigenous cultures. See for yourself.
